It's important that your workers are aware of the potential dangers associated with the operation of a boiler so that action can be taken to avoid a serious boiler emergency from occurring in the future.
1. Fuel Explosions
Boilers rely on a fuel source to provide the combustion required for proper heating. This fuel source can be dangerous when an explosion occurs within the furnace. The source of most fuel explosions can be traced back to a lack of proper maintenance.
Components within the boiler system must be kept clean and functional for fuel to be properly distributed throughout the furnace. Establish a routine maintenance schedule for your boiler to avoid fuel explosions from compromising the safety of your boiler in the future.
2. Low Water Conditions
Boilers harness the power of steam to provide valuable heating services. In order to produce the steam required to function properly, water levels within your boiler must remain adequate at all times.
Low water conditions can lead to a catastrophic boiler failure. Water acts as an insulator to help absorb the heat generated within the boiler. Without this insulator, temperatures inside the boiler will build. Eventually, enough pressure builds from the high internal temperatures to cause the boiler to explode.
This type of failure can be avoided by simply checking water levels in your boiler on a regular basis. Leaks should be repaired quickly to prevent water loss in the boiler system from compromising the safety of your manufacturing facility.
3. High Water Conditions
You may be tempted to fill your boiler with water to help avoid the potential for an explosion. This is not a good idea.
When water levels within a boiler are too high, sludge and limescale can accumulate on the interior surfaces of the pipes and tubes connected to your boiler. Buildup can contribute to corrosion that might compromise the efficiency and safety of your boiler.
High water levels also cause a phenomenon referred to as foaming. Foaming leads to drum level instability and the frequent sounding of water level alarms. Don't overfill your boiler with water. Keep water levels within the specifications recommended by your boiler's manufacturer to avoid a boiler emergency brought on by corrosion.Share
